Sri Ramakrishna Math National School, Chennai, was started in 1906 by Swami Ramakrishnananda, a direct disciple of Sri Ramakrishna.
It was housed in a rented building at Krishnappa Naicken Agrahara Street, Periamet, Chennai. To collect funds for starting and running the school, he, along with few devotees, carried a Hundi (a wooden box) and begged from door-to-door from Chindadripet to Georgetown in Chennai.
On 8 December 1978, the foundation stone for the new building in the current premises near Basin Bridge, Mint, was laid by Swami Tapasyanandaji Maharaj, then Vice President of Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission. It was formally opened on October 3, 1980, by the then Governor of Tamil Nadu, Sri. Prabhudas Patwari, in the presence of Srimat Swami Bhuteshanandaji Maharaj, the then President of Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission. The school has been functioning here since then.
In 2006 the School celebrated 100 years in imparting education to thousands of children mostly from economically and socially poor backgrounds.
The School Now
The School is aided by the State Government of Tamil Nadu and is managed by Sri Ramakrishna Math, Chennai. It is affiliated to the Directorate of Elementary Education, Government of Tamil Nadu and has adopted the ‘Samacheerkalvi’ syllabus and text books prescribed by them. The current system of ‘Trimester’ Syllabi is followed.
We have 471 students on our rolls as in the academic year 2013-14.
Student’s Family Economic – Survey
The school has a well-equipped computer lab with 20 computers. A qualified teacher, appointed by the Math, imparts basic computer operational training to the students. The educational media are regularly shown to students using computers and projector.
The school with its axiom that physical strength reflects in mental strength, requires students to compulsorily participate in sports. The School campus has a spacious ground where the children play under guidance and encouragement of teachers.
Training in music is imparted to students at all levels with the help of class teachers. During these classes, students are taught cultural, devotional and patriotic songs.
Gadadhara Abhyudaya Prakalpa Project
Gadadhara Abhyudaya Prakalpa is a programme for harmonious and overall development of children —physical, intellectual, and moral. This programme was started in the year 2011 by Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission, Belur Math, Kolkata through its branch centers across India, aided for first few years by the Govt. of India, to commemorate the 150th Birth Anniversary of Swami Vivekananda. Beneficiaries of the programme are poor children living nearby. And the project is being continued by the Math.
Some of the activities under this programme are:
- Children are provided nutritious food.
- Children are taught to do yogasanas and physical exercises regularly.
- Children are imparted moral and cultural values through stories, lives and teachings of great personalities.
- Bhajans (devotional singing) is taught.
- Also part of the program is educational-tour: all the children are taken on educational tours to nearby places of interest and learning to broaden their awareness.
The Math has been striving its best in improving the infrastructure of the School through donations. For example, a reverse osmosis plant has been commissioned in the school premises to provide safe and pure drinking water, which has greatly contributed in improving the health of the children most of them come from economically and socially poor backgrounds.
